mountain collage #22

My collage series features early modern dancers placed in a sublime mountain setting. I am inspired by the dancers’ physical expressions. They represent creativity, well-being, optimism and life itself.

The mountain landscape is made of crumpled paper, drawn into and collaged over a watercolor background. The dancing figures are miniature reproductions of iconic dancers in fluid, expressive poses, and are placed in harmony with their background. The color schemes are inspired by hand colored photographs and lantern slides.

Surreal Theatrical Collages

Surreal Theatrical Collages

I started doing these little scenes like these a few years ago as part of The Postcard Project. I was originally inspired by paintings of set designs by Walter Röhrig that I had seen at the Haunted Screens exhibit at LACMA as well as other German Expressionist work. These combine characters found in historic photos and some famous early modern dancers  (or in one case, me), collaged onto my very loosely drawn backgrounds.
